The Invitation Wording

Your invitation wording answers the following basic questions, typically from top to bottom:
Who is hosting the event and what is being celebrated? Who is the event for? When will the event take place?
Where will the event be located?

Let’s break these down a little further.

Who is Hosing the Event?

Typically the invitation begins by indicating who the host of the event will be. In the case of a wedding where the parents of the bride are hosting the event, it would begin in a similar fashion to the following:

Mr. and Mrs. Robert Stevens
request the honour of your presence
at the marriage of their daughter

There are a number of hosting scenarios depending on family circumstances, such as when parents are divorced, remarried, have passed away, or when both the bride’s and the groom’s parents are sharing the responsability.
Whatever the circumstance, the host is almost always listed first.

If the bride and groom are handling the responsability of hosting themselves, then this section is ommited. Rather, the invitation will simply begin with a brief inviting message, such as “Together with their friends and family…”

Who is the Event For?

Following the mention of the host, the names of the bride and groom are listed. If the brides family is hosting, the bride is mentioned first, then the groom, as shown below:

If the bride’s last name was already mentioned in the hosting section, it is often ommited where her name is mentioned.

After the bride and groom are listed, the invitation will traditionally list the names of the groom’s parents, as shown below:

When Will the Event Take Place?

After the bride and groom are listed, the day of the week, date, year, and time are listed as follows:

Saturday the twenty-ninth of September
Two thousand and twelve
four o’clock in the afternoon

Where Will the Event Take Place?

The name of the venue along with the complete address is listed next:

The Grand Ballroom
1201 Lexington Boulevard
Anytown, State, 12345

Finally, if the reception is to take place at the same location, a brief note indicating this fact can be listed as ”Reception to Follow”, or something to that effect.
